In My
Father's Den
3 September 2004
Press Release
The acclaimed New Zealand movie, In My Fathers
Den has been selected for three major international film festivals.
In My Fathers Den has
been invited to the 29th Toronto Film Festival in Canada, the 52nd
San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain and the 9th Pusan Film Festival
in Korea.
"It is really exciting and a great honour
to be recognised by these festivals" says director Brad McGann
who is expected to attend one of the upcoming film festivals, along
with members of the production team.
In
My Fathers Den is an intricately layered, character-driven mystery,
written and directed by Brad McGann, based on the acclaimed novel
by Maurice Gee.
The film will have its North American premiere
at Toronto this month, joining a select group of films that have
premiered as part of the Toronto Film Festival. Toronto is considered
to be one of the elite film festivals in the world.
In My Father's Den will compete for the New Directors
Award at San Sebastian Film Festival. San Sebastian is one of Europes
leading five film events (alongside Cannes, Berlin, Venice and
Locarno), and takes place in September. The film is competing alongside
17 other films from around the world for a category prize valued
at NZ$167,000.
On selecting
the film, Festival Director, Mikel Olaciregui commented what we
first liked about this wonderful movie, was its impressive narrative
technique&the
story of the film, which is full of secret stories, is fascinating
from the beginning to the end. Brad McGann is a very good director
and I admire his work. I really hope that participation in San
Sebastian will be the beginning for a very successful career, which
without any doubt he deserves said Mr Olaciregui.
The Toronto and San Sebastian
combination matches that of the New Zealand movie, Whale Rider,
which screened at both festivals in 2002.
In
My Fathers Den will have its Asian premiere in October at the
regions leading film festival, Pusan in South Korea. The festival
is heavily attended by American agents and buyers, representatives
from Europe (including scouts for Cannes) along with distributors
from across Asia.
Toronto and Pusan are important emerging markets
for producers and filmmakers and a delegation of New Zealanders
will attend both festivals.
In My Father's Den had its world premiere at
the Sydney Film Festival in June, where it was the first New Zealand
film to open the festival in its 51-year history.
The film has already received considerable critical
acclaim.
