An Aussie first for a New Zealand movie. My Father's Den, an adaptation of the Maurice Gee novel, will open the Sydney Film Festival tonight.

It is the first time in its 50-year history that a New Zealand feature has kicked off the Australian event.

Festival director Gayle Lake describes it as one of the best films she has seen in years.

It stars British actor Mathew MacFadyen who currently plays the lead role in the TV drama Spooks.

Playing alongside him is Auckland University student Emily Barclay who has had no formal acting training.

Director Brad McGann says his first film explores secrets and families, and the way the past impacts on the present.

Tonight's screening is also the movie's world premiere. My Father's Den will next screen at the Auckland and Wellington film festivals next month.
