IN MY FATHER’S DEN HITS MILLION DOLLAR MARK

23 November 2004
Press Release

New Zealand movie In My Father’s Den has reached a total of $1million in box office revenue, seven weeks after the release in New Zealand cinemas, and it continues to play strongly around the country. Kiwi movies that have made it past the million-dollar mark include Once Were Warriors, Whale Rider and The Piano.

The film remains in the top ten list of movies currently showing at the New Zealand box office. More than 100,000 New Zealanders have seen the film.

" I am very excited that there is a drive towards New Zealand films and film making and the box office results of this title supports that, I would encourage everyone to go and see it" said Bill Hood of the Motion Picture Distributor Association.

“ It’s great to see New Zealanders embracing the film, which has already established itself as one of our most acclaimed movies ever, here and internationally” says New Zealand Film Commission Head of Sales & Marketing, Kathleen Drumm.

Last week at the NZ Film and Television Industry Conference in Auckland In My Father’s Den producer Trevor Haysom was awarded the SPADA Independent Producer of the Year prize. “I’m very proud and honoured to be bestowed this award by my peers. It’s been a big year for my company and the NZ film industry,” said Haysom.

Also at the awards, the film’s casting director Diana Rowan received the SPADA Onfilm Industry Champion Award. Rowan cast Emily Barclay in a starring role in the film. Rowan’s other credits include casting Anna Pacquin in The Piano and Keisha Castle-Hughes in Whale Rider.

Success at the New Zealand box office has reflected the film’s other achievements. The film won the Jury Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain and the International Critics Prize at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

In My Father’s Den has received considerable critical acclaim since its premiere at the opening night of the Sydney Film Festival in June. “Artfully played and depicted with acute sensitivity,” wrote Russell Edwards in Variety.
